Kindle Keyboard Review

Kindle Keyboard 6″ E Ink Display is a “carbon copy” of Kindle Touch with many of the same features except for the actual keyboard to satisfy one’s tactile preference. It is another great e reader at a very affordable price to give you a delightful reading experience!

Who Is Kindle Keyboard For?

Kindle Keyboard is an excellent ereading device for those who’d like to venture out into the ereading revolution.  Shed pounds of hard copy books when you are vagabonding or just read a book before your bedtime.

Who Is Kindle Keyboard Not For?

You know who you are if you would rather use a touch screen or just crave for minimalism in design.  Kindle Touch is definitely a better choice for you.

Display/Screen Size

The display for Kindle Keyboard is the standard one for most of the Kindles.  The display is powered by E-Ink Pearl technology, the very best in ereading.  The text is crisp and contrast sharp. The screen size is 6”.

The design is no different from most of Kindles with its simple and quality materials resistant to accidental drops and bumps.

Since the keyboard is built into the actual display screen, the actual dimensions are 7.5″ x 4.8″ x 0.34″, slightly longer than Kindle Touch due to the actual keyboard. The total weight for the device is 8.5 and 8.7 ounces respectively for Kindle Keyboard Wi-Fi and Kindle Keyboard Wi-Fi with 3G. It’s perfect to hold with one hand for a few hours.

User Interface

Navigation through content and on the screen display is done via a keyboard instead of a multi-touch screen.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record about Amazon’s vast content availability.  It is in millions and growing by the day.

To save you $50.00, you can buy Kindle Keyboard with special offers.  This means is that you’ll be served with sponsored ads/special offers when you first turn on the device on the Home screen and when the screen saver comes on.  The ad or offer is not intrusive or obnoxious at all.  You would barely notice it as it is served at the very bottom of the screen.  You’ll have to really look for it to notice it.

Memory, Storage and Battery

Kindle Keyboard comes with 4GB memory, which doubles that of the Kindle.  The actual storage for content is about 3GB.  It has no problem holding up to 3,500 books, 500 more books than Kindle Touch.  The battery life for this device is one of the best in Amazon Kindle series, i.e. 2 months with wireless off with 30 minutes of reading per day.  Charging time is 4.5 hours, which is 30 minutes longer than Kindle Touch.

Kindle Keyboard supports private and public Wi-Fi networks or hotspots.  It also comes with global 3G capability for the same price.  Amazon covers 3G expenses. I would pick the 3G version regardless of traveling a lot or not since it costs the same.

How Much Does It Cost?

Kindle Keyboard with Wi-Fi and Kindle Keyboard with Wi-Fi and 3G all costs the same price with ads and more without ads.  If you don’t mind seeing a few ads here and there, you can save $50.00 to get the one with ads.  Then invest the $50.00 on ebooks and magazine subscription.  The choice is all yours.

What’s Included?

The package includes Kindle Keyboard e-reader, U.S. power adapter (supports 100V-240V), USB 2.0 cable, and a rechargeable battery.  This is a clear benefit for you as most of the previous models all have a sealed battery.  It is inconvenient and costly if you need to change the battery.

Does It Include A Warranty?

A 1-year limited warranty and service is included.  There is an option to purchase a 2-year Extended Warranty available for U.S. customers.  The price at the time of this review is $40.00.  Note: The Extended Warranty is really only for one additional year to the first year base warranty coverage.

What People Are Saying

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 reviewed by 35,476 customers on Amazon as of January 23, 2012.  This is by far the best rating out of all Kindle series.

Any Complaints?

  • The 3G global coverage is not for all countries and regions.  Make sure you check into it before buying the 3G.
  • It is cumbersome to organize books and other content in the Kindle if you own thousands of books.
